Colors never looked more vibrant than they did on a sunny, Kansas day. The mere idea seemed absurd, like something some romance novelist would write, but it was true. He'd never noticed how bright the world could appear until the first day he'd ridden beside Clark at his lover's insistence. He'd been the enthusiastic, wriggling, little proverbial puppy dog he so often was when happy, and Lex had gone along with him so he could show him all the countryside sights he'd enjoyed since a little boy every Spring time. He'd bemoaned the trivialness of it all at first, but soon he'd come to enjoy it.

There was something about bouncing along on horseback against one's lover that was thoroughly enjoying, but it wasn't just the fact that they were out on a bright, beautiful day with a strong beast moving between their legs and sending them bouncing against each other's harder bodies. It wasn't even the fact that he had Clark all to himself, his arms wrapped around him, and was able to kiss him and snuggle his face into his neck at any time without having to worry about any enemies or paparazzi seeing them. Or, for that matter, regular civilians seeing them and their nasty, wagging tongues reaching out too far. He knew Jonathan still didn't understand the true depth of their friendship, and he feared the man, who was stuck in his neanderthal morals, might be so angry when he found out that he would cause him to lose Clark.

Likewise, he feared his own father finding out the truth, because he knew he would try his best to hurt Clark. He couldn't by any conventional means, of course, but with Lionel, that only meant he'd go after Jonathan and Martha. Clark grimaced as Lex suddenly gripped him harder at the thought. "What's wrong?" he whispered in immediate concern.

"Nothing," Lex bluffed smoothly. "Just thinking," he admitted a second later. Why was it, he wondered, that he could lie to anyone in the world but this wonderful man who he so wanted to just protect, keep happy, and love?

"Well, stop it," Clark retorted. The words could have sounded angry, could have quite possibly gotten any one else blasted, but Lex could hear his tiny grin in his voice. "Today's supposed to be a happy day. Winter's over. Spring's beginning. Look at the baby animals."

Lex laughed. He couldn't help it. Only his lover would know that such innocents could actually move the hard, cruel heart of Lex Luthor! "They're sweet," he replied, glancing at a mother quail and her chicks who were hurrying out of the trail. He kissed Clark's strong, tanned neck. "But you're sweeter." His teeth grazed his skin. "And tastier."

Clark yelped in surprise, and Lex laughed again. His smile lit up his handsome face. Let Lionel come when he would, and he know he would. What his father didn't understand was that neither he nor Clark were to be trifled with. They'd both protect Clark's family, and together they were a force that could not be beat. He would beat his own father down when it came to it to protect the Kents. He'd do anything to protect this man and his Saint of a mother.

"How much longer is this ride? All this bouncing is making me hard." He leaned in and rubbed against Clark's ass through his jeans, letting his true meaning sink in. He could feel Clark's blush from where he sat behind him. It was hot as the sun in the brilliant, blue sky.

Lex looked around them again, at all the lush, green vegetation and the animals in their natural habitats. They trusted Clark and never tried to run from him although Lex himself could not approach a single one. Clark had once helped a baby deer who'd gotten her hoof hurt on a trap a callous hunter had left behind. The fawn and even her mother, when she'd found them, had been fine with Clark, but the moment Clark had tried to get the deer to allow Lex to pet the baby, the animals had split and ran. They sensed something about him, something even his father had yet to fully comprehend.

"Stop," Clark ordered suddenly.

"What is it?" Lex asked, tensing. "Is something wrong? Something in the trail ahead?" He'd even seen his young lover stop everything to help a snake of all animals.

"You. You're thinking too much." Clark twisted suddenly, leaning almost completely off of their mount, and kissed Lex. He managed to hold the position long enough to kiss him deeply and passionately, his tongue thrusting against his and effectively easing all the tension out of Lex's hard body and sharp mind. "There you go," he said, grinning widely and releasing him, when he saw his blue eyes become soft once more. "Stop worrying so much. We're fine. Nobody's gonna see us out here, and I don't care if the reporters take our pictures. I know you do, but I don't."

If he understood what kind of a monster he was, he would, but he wasn't going to worry about that. The tabloids were the least of their problems, but even Lionel wasn't going to touch his mind and invade on their time again today. Before Clark could straighten again, he leaned forward and kissed him once more, just as deep. He let his lips linger on his mouth and his tongue inside him even longer before finally letting him retake his position.

Clark sighed, but there was joy in the quiet sound. "We'll be at the creek soon."

Lex beamed, understanding the unspoken promise. He was glad he'd actually left his cell phone in his car. Nothing and no one was going to interrupt them today, and their first Spring date was going to be just as perfect as he wished every day could be for them. He had more money than anybody else in Smallville could hope to attain in their lifetime, but he still couldn't guarantee their happiness or peace most days. Most days. But not today. Today, he vowed, settling in to enjoy the rest of the ride and beginning to kiss Clark's back, would be as perfect and glorious as the gorgeous Spring weather all around them.

The End
